I'll be attending the opening night of the 10th version of the 'Don't Wake Daddy' group exhibition. Drop by for a look and a chat!

Edit: I was there but sadly I could not attend due to a sudden stomach flu. I hope that those who went to the opening night had a nice evening. (Missed it too? Here's a quick view of the exhibition from the Hamburg Journal, starting at 11:05).

Bronco for BLAB!

'Bronco', approx. 26,5 cm (10.43") square, made for the upcoming BLAB! group exhibition at Copro Gallery, depicts a spotted rodent facing a feral flower. I've had much fun painting this piece. Go and have a look when you're around Bergamot Station (Santa Monica, CA) September 12th to see the actual depth of the original -which is always hard to capture on camera- and/or to feast your eyes on the work of the other participants. The show runs through October 3rd, 2015.
The acrylic on panel piece is framed in a bronze coloured, straight wooden frame with a soft 'gold leaf look' and has a dark brown wooden fillet.

Update

Oh man, it has been a while since I last posted something on my blog! Time seems to be in warp drive sometimes. Here's an update;

To create room for new inspiration I will be working on group exhibitions and projects for a while. One of these projects is a new book. The working title is 'The Engine Room' and it will focus on my creative process and all that comes with it. This 'behind the scenes' publication looks into all the various aspects of my work like painting and drawing techniques, the idea process, presentation and more and will be accompanied by illustrations, photographs and the latest and some never before shown work.
The content for The Engine Room has been growing steadily but I'm not there yet. It will take me (more) time and effort before I can call it finished. In the meanwhile Ill keep you in the loop.

Next on my show schedule is the BLAB! group exhibition at Copro Gallery (LA, USA) this upcoming september. More details will be posted closer to the date and in my newsletter. Ill also be returning to Feinkunst Krüger (Hamburg, Germany) and Roq la Rue Gallery (Seatlle, WA, USA) later this year.

I've added two new fine art giclée prints to the Femtasia webshop; 'Rise & Shine' and 'Crafties'. A woozy sun or two crafty little foxes, delivering both instant coolness for your walls. In the second half of August I'll announce them officially in my newsletter but they are already available in web shop, from now.

Enjoy the summer!

New prints; 'Rise & Shine' and 'Crafties', signed and numbered, edition of 100. Available in the web shop.

Summer fruit surprise in my garden; watermelons. Once comatose sprouts, now growing fast (2 meters and counting) bearing these flower topped stripey marbles. Curious to see if they will develop into something edible.

Sneak Peek New Work

One of the things I'm currently working on is a (street) theater inspired piece. A kingfisher is part of the main characters. It is, in fact, a replacement character since the first, a Bichon Frisé (a type of lap dog) refused to come out of my brush in the right way. To me the dog kept resembling Lex Goudsmit (a Dutch actor who was known for his work on the Dutch Sesame Street, among other things). And once noticing the likeness I could not get rid of it, even after several re-paints.
Damn you, Lex Goudsmit!
But I'm pleased with how the bird is drying up. More sharing of this piece later on.

The Graphic Art of the Underground; a Recommendation

September last year I announced the release of the book 'The Graphic Art of the Underground' on this blog. And although I'm still in the middle of reading, I can already recommend this book.

The Graphic Art of the Underground makes five underground art movements insightful by putting it along historical and cultural lines and highlighting all that's connecting from outside and in between. What I know about the visual art of alternative cultures is pretty basic to 'that rings a bell...' so I found this book a very welcome addition.
The book is about US letter (+-A4) size and is a mix between a 'look book' and an informative work.  Suzy Prince (edit & text) and Ian Lowey (edit, text & design) not only put together a great selection of artworks, but also set it in a no-nonsense lay-out, giving each image room to bloom.

More information on the Graphic Art of the Underground website. (The book is now available all over the world).

Photo above: stormy weather outside, tea + cookies + GAotU book inside. I'm happy with the reproduction of my work in the book - it looks great! Photo below: some spreads from the book.

Rise & Shine

Above, some images of one of my last pieces, 'Rise & Shine', depicting the story about the time the sun was hammered and got the dawn in trouble. This acrylic on book cover painting was in the 'Don't Wake Daddy #9' group exhibition at Feinkunst Krüger, Hamburg, Germany, December 2014.

Royal de Luxe

While doing research for a new piece about street theater, I stumbled upon the French marionette street theater group called Royal de Luxe. I remember seeing their 'Little Girl-giant' and the elephant on photo's once (shown above) but can't recall seeing them move. And they move, alright! Those blinking eyes, subtle tilts of the head watching the onlookers, that must have been such a sight from human stand point. Here's a nice, 11 minute YouTube clip of the girl and the elephant, but you can find much more about Royal de Luxe's projects, parades and other giant marionettes on their website.
